Potty training!
The little adventurer has taken a huge interest in the toilet recently, he’s been using his little toilet seat and stool for a while just to sit on and get used to sitting on the porcelain throne.
He took his first wee wee on the toilet about a month or so ago and the adventurer in training gave him lots of praise and applause! Then it became a game of going wee. With this eagerness to use the toilet and only having the one toilet upstairs we decided to purchase a potty!
everywhere you find advice for potty training suggests letting little ones pick out their own potty as it will encourage them to use it! However, amidst lockdown we couldn‘t take the little adventurer potty shopping, so we found one Amazon, it’s cute, it’s functional and looks like an actual toilet. We also ordered a potty story book to help the little adventurer understand in a fun way about our expectations! That’s fun right!? potty training is built up around the grown ups expectations, cause it always goes our way right!? Wrong!!
We got him some “big boy“ pants, popped them straight on, cool green dinosaurs all over them, the little adventurer ran around the house sporting his pants and then peed himself, watching the pee trickle down his leg, haha that’s great! Nappy back on!! That didn’t go to plan!
Ok let’s think about this! Change happens slowly, let’s take it back a notch or five! We decided to try nappy pants again, get him used to pulling up and down and if he wees or poops no big deal.
We sat down together and read “Pirate Pete Potty”which has a brilliant cheering sound button, hooray! The little adventurer loved the book and we read it at least once a day, definitely recommend it, it actually makes you the grown ups relax a little about potty training, there is no right or wrong way, it’s not a military operation it takes practice, as most important things do.
Next step, we talked about if you need to go wee wee ask mummy or daddy and say “wee wee” shall we try to go wee wee now? The little adventurer nodded with glee and off we went to his brand new out the box potty, he sat down and did a wee! Woooohooo!! We clapped and clapped and gave him all the praise in the world, over the top? Yes!! Do it! He stood up and inspected his triumphant wee on his potty, “eeeew” was is response. We told him it’s a good thing to wee in his toile, we let him
flush it, yes his posh potty has a flusher and a sound machine. We rinsed and disinfected the potty, popped it back nice and clean and he clapped himself for going wee wee Then we washed hands together!
Now this isn’t sussed yet, we are still training, he’s had a few dry days and a couple of dry nights too, but, accidents still happen, he gets engrossed in his play and wees without saying he had to go. He’s still in nappy pants and that’s fine. We now offer him and take him to the toilet or potty every 30-45 minutes 9/10 times he’ll go.
The idea is to not make it stressful for you, make it fun for your little and follow their lead! The little adventurer comes to the toilet with you, I mean all kids follow mummy everywhere right!!? He asks if you’re going wee or poopy, he gives you a big ole clap once you’re done and we wash our hands. He sees it as a normal thing that you just go and do hopefully it’ll give him the independence of going to do himself!
Theres a mum blogger I follow on Instagram and she had such a great post on potty training that it inspired us, @theunyoungmum https://instagram.com/theunyoungmum?igshid=1af3kl7elx5gk give her a follow. She has a post about potty training classes online and it gave her confidence to try again. I loved the fact she used a teddy for her little to help with nappy and “big boy” pants that we did a similar play to show the little adventure that it’s not stressful and it’s a fun way to encourage them about potty training!
The little adventurer has been taking his baybee to go for a wee wee on his potty which is really sweet, so, we incorporated that into a play. He got to put a nappy on his doll, take it off and put baby on the potty, put pants onto baby and read the potty book to his baby. He loved the activity and hopeful it gives him more confidence and control with his potty training journey!
Thank you for reading, please let us know of your potty training trials and tribulations, we’d love to hear from you!
